Reflection

Throughout this course, I've learned how to format a research paper including the literature review and research proposal. The textbook we used made it a lot easier to learn the methods and formatting for a research paper while also providing good examples of what these methods look like in action. Even if I don't end up going into the research part of TW&DR, it's good to know how to write a research paper and also how to read one. It's helpful to know how one is supposed to look like so that I can also judge for myself if a research paper is good or not. Knowing what a sound research study looks like makes it easier in the future to identify helpful research studies and will help me parse through information. In case I do go the research route, this will be a good asset to use in identifying methods, methodology, and formatting a useful research template.

Revision Plans

What I partially need to fix is fitting my research and frame into the TW&DR field, which is why I went with a more vague view of interviewing anybody rather than specific personality types. Another way I need to revise is thinking more of how I want to present data findings. I'll do qualitative results in the form of coding and clouds, but it could be interesting to see the results in percentages and the like. It could also be interesting to see where different characteristics come into play, such as age, which could also help by seeing it in percentage form. I still need to think of interview questions, especially ones that will really narrow down my focus to answer my research questions and are specific enough. I mostly need to focus on the research process and what that'll look like.

Research Gaps

The main research gap I found was the lack of work concerning news rhetoric and personality types. There's plenty on news rhetoric and the impact it has one people and how images are impactful tools of rhetoric, and there's some research done on the effect of images on introverts. However, there is little on the impact of specifically news rhetoric on introverts versus extroverts. Where my own research comes in is finding that research and seeing if there is a difference in the levels of empathy that personality types feel toward strangers. I think it would be interesting to see how personality types react to news rhetoric and the images that are shown on a daily basis and if people are more willing to act based on what they see. The main gap was this effect of empathy between introverts and extroverts, so it'll be interesting to see where the research goes and if significant data emerges.

Tentative Sources

Topic Goal Questions Type Method The rhetoric of photojournalism on different personality types Understand if there is a rhetorical effect on introverts vs extroverts in photojournalism What photos are most empathetic? Is there a greater effect on introverts vs extroverts? Are certain people more willing to act based on photos? Empirical Literature review, mixed methods The topic I will be going ahead with is the impact on news photography on introverts and extroverts. I want to see what photos affect introverts vs extroverts and if there’s a difference at all. To do this, I also want to delve into the rhetoric of photojournalism and what images evoke strong feelings with an audience and if they have any impact on their actions. Research Topics

I've always had an interest in visual rhetoric and how it influences people. A couple semesters ago, I looked into costume design as visual rhetoric, and that was very interesting to go into. I would maybe like to go on another branch of that, looking at another aspect that hasn't really been delved into much. I actually recently read the book  Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking , and that briefly touched on how different images evoked different reactions from people that helped to differentiate extrovert and introvert personality traits. Something like that could be interesting to go down a rabbit hole into. Frances's idea of analyzing book covers kind of made me think about perhaps looking at the visual rhetoric of album covers. that could be interesting to see as well, the trends of what's popular and attractive to people.  TOPIC GOAL QUESTIONS TYPE METHODS Album covers ...
